Indonesia is an archipelago with more than 17,000 islands. But, the people mostly lives only on the big islands. One of the big island is Papua. What is Red Fruit Papua?

Red fruit in Indonesian language is buah merah. Buah is fruit and merah is red. And, in local Papua language, they call it as kuansu. It has a scientific name as Pandanus conoideus. Visually, this is a big tree with up to 16 meter high. While, the fruit length is 55 – 100 cm, diameter 10 – 18 cm, and weight up to 7.5 kg. It looks like a giant carrot. Its color is red. Therefore, people call it as a red fruit.

The red fruit trees live in the high land of Papua. There are not many plants there. So, the people use it as one of their consumption. They serve it during the traditional rituals. One of it is the adat bakar batu or stone burn ritual. Besides, some people use it as a medicine. Traditionally, the indigenous people of Papua consumed it to cure several diseases, such as eye disease, worm disease, skin disease, and to strengthen their stamina.

Current Study of Buah Merah

Currently, people in Papua already make a cultivation of red fruit. Some researches also already in place. A research observed the health of people in Papua. They live traditionally in the high land of Papua, with limited facilities and services. They also wear limited clothing in the unfriendly weather. But, they have a good health and stamina.

Based on research, the red fruit can improve our health and stamina. It also can cure some diseases. Because it contains some useful materials, like antioxidant (carotene, beta carotene, tocopherol), and other materials to strengthen our body immunity. Study shows that the red fruit has huge amount of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. Therefore, people believe that it can help to cure and prevent some diseases, like HIV, cancer, hepatitis, stroke, diabetes, stroke, osteoporosis, lowers uric acid, improve brain function, eye disorders, cholesterol, d lupus, etc.
