Solo Central Java

Solo is one of the city in Central Java province of Indonesia. It is located in the heart of Java island. Solo become more popular because the president of Indonesia was born there. His name is Joko Widodo or Jokowi.

The formal name for Solo city is Surakarta. Administratively, the government of Indonesia register Solo city as Surakarta city, and it is under the management of Central Java provincial government. While, Central Java is one of the province from all 34 provinces in Indonesia. Geographically, Indonesia is a nation in South East Asia region. What makes Indonesia unique is because it is an archipelago. Indonesia is a country with more than 17,000 islands. Among 17,000 islands, people are inhabiting around 1,342 islands or about 12.38 percent. The rest are still uninhabited.

History of Solo

During the kingdoms era, in around 17th century, Sala was a name of a village in Kartasura kingdom. Because of an internal conflict, Sala then became the new palace as the replacement for Kartasura which had been ruined. This new palace then named as Surakarta kingdom.

In Solo of Central Java, currently there are two kingdoms: Kasunanan and Mangkunegaran. Both are have no power or authority to rule the area, they are as a symbol of cultural heritage. This condition is different with the neighbor region; Special District of Yogyakarta. The king of Yogya (Sultan) is still running his power and authority to rule the region, together with its “brother” kingdom Pakualaman.

How to go to Solo in Central Java

It is not difficult to reach Solo. There are several options to go to Solo in Central Java, either by air or land transportation. From Jakarta, the capitol of Indonesia, we can use plane, train or bus or even by renting a private car if you wish to. Solo is located around 500 km to the east of Jakarta. By a car, we need to drive about 7 hours. This driving is more convenient after the government built a new trans-Java toll road. By plane, the air ticket is ranging from IDR 500,000 – 1,500,000 (USD 36 – 108) for one-way trip and we will fly for about 1 hour. By train, it will take around 10 hours with the fare ranging from IDR 100,000 – 500,000 (USD 7.2 – 36). The similar price and time for bus.
